Social Studies 9 (course code: MSS--09) - 1st semester
This course takes the student to the roots of our Canadian heritage: our native peoples, the early exploration of North America, trade, French and English settlement, and colonial conflict/conquest (up to the War of 1812). We also study current events and issues, and investigate the relationship between Christianity and culture. Our text is Community Canada (Oxford).

Mathematics 9 (course code: MMA--09) - 1st semester
Students who are ready for gr.9 Math may jump right into Teaching Textbooks: Algebra. This quality curriculum includes instructional CDs. The gr. 9 course content covers powers and square roots, operations on polynomials, linear equations (and word problems), linear inequalities, circle properties, surface area of 3-D objects, similarity of polygons, scale diagrams, line and rotation symmetry, and data collection and analysis. Geometry-related topics are taught via MathLinks. If needed, CCA funds are available for math tutors, although the gr.9 teacher is regularly available to help over the phone and on Elluminate Live, which facilitates the use of a whiteboard.

English Language Arts 9 (course code: MEN--09) - 2nd semester
In this course, blocks of literature studies (electronic assignments) are alternated with blocks of grammar or writing exercises. Reading material includes The Hiding Place, a novel of choice, and either Out of the Silent Planet or I Heard the Owl Call My Name, as well as a collection of poetry, short stories, and media communications. Students are given opportunities to share their ideas and their writing with classmates.

Science 9 (course code: MSC--09) - 2nd semester
This course is broken into four units: Space Exploration; Atoms, Elements, and Compounds; Characteristics of Electricity; and Reproduction. The last unit lends itself to important discussions on science and ethics. Students will be doing hands-on investigations and labs using easy-to-obtain materials. Text: BC Science 9.

Health and Career Education 9 (course code: HCE.9 AA) - all year
Assignments in this course relate to self-organization; study skills; personal strengths and goals; preparation for graduation and career; role models; a healthy lifestyle; healthy relationships; injury prevention and basic first aid. As with other delivered courses, we attempt to study these topics from a Christian perspective.

Physical Education 9 (course code: PE9.AA) - all year
Students record their PE activities on a time sheet and complete two written assignments.

Applied Skills - choose one from these three:
* Foods and Nutrition
* Textiles
* Infotech (Information Technology) - all year

  • Tech Ed, if it can be arranged in the student's own community

Parents please note: When possible, we encourage gr.8/9 students to do the equivalent of four credits
of Fine Arts in gr.8 and four credits of Applied Skills in gr.9, rather than do two credits of both subjects, both years.

Foods and Nutrition - Topics of study include healthy food choices, food patterns and customs,
food safety, kitchen safety, kitchen literacy and numeracy, becoming a wise consumer, and meal
planning. We use the textbook, Food for Life. In addition to their written assignments,
students are required to cook and bake 12-14 times throughout the school year.

Textiles (Sewing) - Topics of study include the safe use of tools and equipment, properties
of various textiles, constructing textile items, applying creative processes, and textile careers.
Students create projects according to their level of experience.

Infotech (Information Technology) This course is chiefly delivered through online
programs. Students log onto their site and work through exercises related to operating systems,
browsers, word processors, and Powerpoint (specific to the computer system/programs they
use in their own homes).

Fine Arts 9 (FA9.AA) mandatory for students who did not take Fine Arts in gr.8
Students can receive Fine Arts credit for dance, drama, music, and visual arts lessons/activities undertaken in the community. The gr.9 homeroom teacher gathers information from instructors, matches activities to learning outcomes, guides additional learning activity, and reports on student progress.

B. Optional Course

Second Language 9 (course code: SL9.AA)
While Second Language is not mandatory in gr.9, students may want to follow up their gr.8 Rosetta Stone studies. Anchor offers French, German, and Spanish.
